The History of Accommodation Oxford

One of the most common reasons that tourists from both the United Kingdom, and all over the world, come to accommodation Oxford is for the historical atmosphere.  The city has such an “old” feeling to it, and you can almost see a glimpse of the way that it used to be before technology.  In order to appreciate all that accommodation Oxford has to offer, it is best to learn about the history of the city.

Oxford became occupied during the Saxon times, and it was also during this time period that the city was called “Oxanforda”.  The settlers started the building of the town with St. Frideswide’s nunnery, which occurred during the 8th century.  This fact was known due to the records written in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.  The town became a military location during the 10th century, by being a competition between Wessex and Mercia.

Shortly after, the University of Oxford was founded, which is also known as the oldest university in the English-speaking language.  While this may sound confusing for some, Oxford is similar to Cambridge in the fact that there is no real “campus”.  It is called a University only for the fact that there are around 30 colleges and other buildings associated with the college that makes up most of the city.

It was during 1214 that Oxford was first considered to be a “university”.  The decision was made by the first Chancellor appointed by the church.  This aspect made many scholars come to Oxford.  However, many of the scholars had riots with the townspeople, forcing the scholars to move to other area towns.

All of the colleges have their own distinct characteristics, many dating back to the 13th century.  The other colleges have only been around for a decade or two.  Most of the colleges are closed to everyone except the public, but they do have special openings during the year.  The colleges are one of the main characteristics of the city that make visitors feel the true history of accommodation Oxford.

The most monumental development in the history of Oxford was the founding of the Christ Church.  This was decided upon by King Henry VIII.  There was a great rift about this founding due to the reformation period.  However, with the royal approval by the King, the University was still protected.  This brought many scholars back to Oxford, who were wanting their sons to be taught in the University.  Many of the middle class men also began offering pay for their sons to be educated, which is one of the main reasons that tuition was enforced throughout the colleges.

Currently, Oxford has a population of around 134,248 persons.  This fact is based on the most previous census.  Both the city and the government reside in Oxfordshire, England.  Oxford also has a long history of car making, particularly the BMW “Minis”, which are produced in the suburb areas of accommodation Oxford.

If you are not very interested in learning about the oldest English-speaking university in the world, then accommodation Oxford is probably not for you.  However, it is very rare for a person to not enjoy their visit to the city.  The historical aspects of accommodation Oxford are not the sole reasons that many prefer to vacation in Oxford.  There are also modern amenities that you can take part in as well.
