Self-Catering in Oxford - the different choices Among the many different choices for accommodations for travelers in Oxford, one of the most popular is self-catering. People come to Oxford from all over the world. They come for the university, the diverse spiritual life, or for the history. They might be there over night and then move on, but they might plan to stay longer, perhaps to do some research at the university or to absorb the feel of a historic place. If you come to Oxford and plan to stay for any length of time, whether one night or several months, you should look into a self-catering arrangement as an option for you. A self-catering arrangement means that you stay in a residence, rather than a hostel, hotel, or inn. A self-catering residence offers a kitchen area where you can prepare your own meals, rather than going out to eat several times every day. Sometimes several people or a whole family might take advantage of this living arrangement; for the economically-minded, it reduces costs significantly. This self-catering residence could be a studio apartment, which is one big open room with a sleeping area, living area and kitchen area. It could also be a larger, one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartment, or perhaps even bigger. These flats are usually fully equipped, with all the amenities you would expect to find if you were living in it as your permanent residence. Another interesting self-catering arrangement involves the small and quaint cottages and farmhouses situated around Oxford. Since by definition farms are in the country, they are not in town, but they do offer privacy, economy, and space. They also allow a family or group to experience English life off the tourist track, in small towns or villages, but always within an easy drive to Oxford. Bed-and-breakfasts and guest houses, both within Oxford proper and in the outlying areas, may also offer a self-catering option. Guest houses may be rented by the room or as a whole house, and the kitchen is often made available to the guest for preparing their own meals. The same is true of bed-and-breakfasts; while you cannot rent out the whole establishment, the proprietors sometimes provide for guests to use the kitchen in order to save on the costs of eating outside of where they are staying. These residences offer varying degrees of services and amenities. Some, for example, offer weekly maid service. Most offer free Internet access which is a must for business and student travelers. Parking is often free in these establishments, and clerks are usually on call to help anyone staying in a flat or house that might need help. The cost is usually based on the size of the apartment, not on the number of people staying in it, so the more people who are traveling together, the more economical a self-catering arrangement might become. Self-catering is an excellent option for anyone traveling to Oxford for business, academics, or even just on holiday. Families and groups, especially, might find it to be exactly what they are looking for.
